I took the catamaran over to the island even though the weather wasn't to good.
I'm glad I did as the place was stunning. and loads of birds in the trees. The town, Oban (population circa 400!), was a lovely little place with a great pub overlooking the harbour.
I hired a 50cc scooter and pootered my way to some of the secluded bays and parked-up and went down a few of the tracks into the forest. Quite eerie (but beautiful) in the semi-darkness surrounded by all the tropical trees and listening to the wildlife in there. Didn't see any kiwis, mind (the feathered ones).
Well worth the trip.
Must make a point here, that this was the first time since Beenleigh that I had seen live possums as the roads in New Zealand are absolutely covered in millions of burst furry creatures, mostly possums. I've seen quite a few New Zealand falcons feasting away at the road table.
I've also posted a pic of what I think is the quaintest public telephone that I've ever seen!
Must be for making trunk calls. Ouch!
